In March of 2020, amid the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, Amazement Square made the difficult decision to close its doors to the public for the safety of the community. As schools across the nation also began shutting for an indeterminate amount of time, museum education staff quickly responded by providing engaging online videos and activities that would promote learning from home. Amazement Square, Anywhere! was launched as the museum’s online platform to address the needs of that difficult situation, but also as a way to provide online resources for teachers and families for years to come.

As part of the Amazement Square, Anywhere! program, Scorpy Sunday was designed to reintroduce The Amazing Adventures of Scorpy Bug comic series to a new generation of learners. Each colorful adventure is paired with a hands-on, at-home learning activity. Originally published as a curriculum-based feature for the “Newspapers in Education” program of The News and Advance from 2005-2009, the comic series follows the adventures of Scorpy and his buggy friends as they learn about science, math, history, geography, and health. The entire series is available and searchable by topic here. The comics are a wonderful way to encourage reading at home or in the classroom. An accompanying Curriculum Resource Guide is available with ideas that extend the learning opportunities within each subject area.

Robots can help welding engineers when a certain workspace is difficult to get to, but how do those robots know exactly what to do? BWXT programmer Leslie andengineer Josh have a game to play with Ms. Anne to help her understand how programmers code robots. You can make your own robot head and play this game at home.
